Volunteer Activities

Bounce & Rhyme - during school term-time, volunteers are asked to help, and occasionally run, a half-hour session. Along with the mums and dads of pre-school children, the volunteer encourages the children to sing nursery rhymes and songs, and helps the children play and enjoy the libraries' collection of musical instruments. *

  • Two sessions are run on a Friday morning at Queen Victoria Road, one at 10 and the other at 11 o'clock.

  • In the future the Library wants to run monthly sessions at Micklefield during the afternoons on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday at 2 o'clock or in the morning on Thursday or Saturday.

Internet User Training - help public users of the library improve their ICT skills by running individual Internet Taster sessions. Each session will last about an hour and the Library would like a session to be run every week. The time to be arranged at the convenience of the volunteer and the trainee.

Visually Impaired Persons' ICT Training - the library would like to train a volunteer in the use of the special VIP computer terminal and software in order to help Library Clients with visual disabilities who would like to use the Internet, Emailing and other Web activities.

Reminiscent Events - volunteers to help occasionally at reminiscent events which involves accompanying a member of staff to local libraries or day centres etc. For a few hours and assist the staff in running the event.

Half Term Events - during the half term and full term school holidays, volunteers help library staff at Castlefield, Micklefield and West Wycombe libraries to organise events for children and parents.

Crossword Afternoon - on the first Wednesday of every month, the Library runs a crossword afternoon between 2 and 4 o'clock. Volunteers are needed to run this event.

Become a Committee Member - as with all voluntary organisations, the activities of the Friends of High Wycombe Library are organised in the first instance by a committee. Inevitably there are vacancies and we always welcome more members to share the satisfaction of helping out the Libraries. Normally a committee member can expect to help out for between one and three hours per month, more if you want.

Give a talk - the Friends host a monthly talk at the Library in Queen Victoria Road. The talk normally lasts between half and three-quarters of an hour with questions to follow. So, if you have specialist knowledge on a topic you would like to share with others, this is the ideal venue in which to do so. For an idea on what sort of talks were given in the past or will be given in the future, please see the Talks page.

Tea & Coffee - periodically the Library runs Tea & Coffee mornings in aid of charity. Volunteers are needed to serve the refreshments and collect the donations.

Story & Craft Time - occasionally we run a children's story time and a couple of craft tables to entertain the children and their parents in the Library. These events take place during the school holidays and are aimed at 5 to 12-year olds. Volunteers are needed to read to the children and help supervise the craft tables.

Visit Schools - as part of the Library's initiative to increase children's (and their parents') membership of the Library, volunteers are needed to accompany staff at evening visits to schools during their parents' evenings. Volunteers help new members to fill in their Library application forms and discuss the facilities offered by the Library.

Be a Steward - at all events hosted by the Friends there is always a need for volunteers to help set up, run and clear up after the event. Stewards basically help out in whatever way they can.
